There’s no doubt that Canggu, Bali is the island’s hippest new neighborhood. Just 20 minutes north of Seminyak, Canggu is a laid-back surfer’s oasis bursting at the seams with new cafes, coffee shops and boutiques. The first time I visited Canggu was back in early summer of 2016 and after just wrapping up my second visit alongside my friend Jess of Bon Traveler, it’s safe to say this community is only in for more changes in the years to come. I couldn’t believe how much development had happened just in the two years between visits! While the main item on your itinerary in Canggu should be to chill out, cafe hopping comes in a close second and I’ve put together this guide to the best restaurants in Canggu so you can eat like a queen between surf sessions. Bon appetit!

The Shady Shack

If you followed my Instagram stories during my latest trip to Bali, then you already know that my absolute favorite cafe on the island is The Shady Shack — I’m obsessed! The vegetarian restaurant has an extensive menu of healthy dishes that are so delicious you’ll forget they’re meat-free. Don’t miss the Nori Bowl, Halloumi Bowl, the Choc Tops Smoothie (I add in a shot of espresso for an extra kick!) and the fresh veggie spring rolls.

Bottega Italiana

This cute little hole in the wall serves up some of the best homemade pasta in Canggu for when that Italian craving strikes. Bottega Italiana‘s original location in Seminyak is much larger than the Canggu outpost which has limited seating, but the intimate vibe adds to the allure in my opinion! Also a great place to pick up pastries, cheeses and bread.

Crate Cafe

What was once a smaller sized cafe in the heart of Canggu, has now expanded to this massive space just down the road. It’s no wonder Crate Cafe needed more room to serve their patrons, because their breakfast all day concept is on point. Come here for the best smoothies and smoothie bowls in town as well as their own unique blend of Crate Coffee.

Nalu Bowls

When you just can’t get enough of Balinese smoothie bowls, Nalu Bowls is another great pitstop to try. It also happens to be attached to my favorite coworking space in the area, Dojo Bali, so you can fuel up and get in a work sesh if the motivation strikes.

Moana Fish Eatery

If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Canggu, your search stops here. A go-to for some of the freshest fish in town, Moana Fish Eatery is a favorite amongst Canggu’s expat community. The Polynesian restaurant has an open air vibe which lends itself well to easy breezy lunches or  romantic dinner dates. Make sure to book a reservation and don’t forget to order the poke bowl with golden sauce!

Leroy’s

I didn’t get a chance to visit Leroy’s on my last trip, but heard friends raving about this place over and over again. From what I’ve been told, the Vietnamese fare is some of the best in Canggu, with plenty of classic dishes like pho and banh mi as well as shared plates to enjoy with friends. The antique decor, hip hop tunes and daily happy hour are only the icing on the cake.

La Baracca

Another favorite of the Canggu expat community, La Baracca specializes in traditional Italian cuisine in a quirky setting away from the main drag in town. This is hands down one of the best restaurants in Canggu, and all of their homemade pizzas and pastas will transport you to Italy with one bite.

Betelnut

During my first trip to Canggu back in 2016, Betelnut was my go-to pit stop for refreshing green smoothies and healthy takes on burgers, wraps, and even classic Indonesian dishes like gado gado. I love the upstairs seating area of the restaurant that feels like an open air treehouse with communal seating in the center in case you’re feeling up to making new friends!

Machinery

More for the coffee and vibes than the food, Machinery is one of the best spots in Canggu to get a caffeine fix while pumping out some work thanks to their high speed wifi. Plus, how cute is their decor?!

Kembali Bumbak

Technically located in Umalas just outside of Canggu, Kembali Bumbak is a newcomer in town but is quickly earning fans in the area. I loved their beautiful white interior and extensive outdoor seating, plus the food was delicious. This spot is an ideal workspace if you’re on the hunt for good table seating, AC and coffee to keep you going.

Gypsy Kitchen + Bar

Gypsy Kitchen + Bar is a collaboration between two heavy hitters on the Canadian foodie track, bar owner Kevin Latrem and renowned chef Robin Filteau-Boucher. Combining both of their years of expertise in restaurants, they’ve created a chic eatery serving up a nice assortment of healthy and savory dishes on order for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fishbone Local

Fishbone Local, which has been written up in magazines like Vogue Living and Grazia is a must for seafood lovers visiting Canggu. Their commitment to sustainability and sourcing locally is admirable — as is their mouth watering menu that changes daily. They’ve even partnered with social enterprise Bali Sustainable Seafood to help increase job opportunities for local fisherman and minimize environmental impact throughout their business practices.

La Brisa

If you’re on the hunt for the bohemian kind of atmosphere that screams ‘I’m on vacation’, then La Brisa will be your new best friend. This beach club situated directly on Echo Beach serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7 am to 11 pm each day, and is one of the best spots in Canggu to chill out for hours while you catch up with friends over a cocktail or meal.

Pro tip: Their on-site ATM is one of the safer spots in town to withdraw cash and avoid skimmers, without having to go too far inland.

Bu Mi

For the best and most affordable Balinese food in the neighborhood, Bu Mi is the spot to be with jam-packed plates of Indonesian fare costing around $3.00 (at most). For travelers on a budget, this should be a staple spot to keep your wallet happy and your stomach full.

A fan favorite of the yoga-loving vegetarian crowd, Cafe Organic‘s slogan is #GardenGangstas and they live up to the tagline. With an extensive menu featuring everything from mezze platters and quinoa vegan sushi to matcha pancakes and chia cups, this cute cafe will leave you feeling both satisfied and energized without an ounce of the guilt.

Varuna Warung

For cheap eats near the beach, Varuna Warung is another go-to for travelers and digital nomads on the hunt for affordable Indonesian fare. Guests can order off the menu or create their own variety plate for a fraction of the price of other nearby eateries. I personally prefer Bu Mi to Varuna, but depending on your location, this is a great second option!

A little off the beaten cafe track, Koloni is a great find that isn’t likely to be overrun by tourists. True to their tagline, “California cuisine, marinated in Bali,” you’ll find fresh and healthy dishes here with an emphasis on veggie heavy creations.

The Lawn

This spot which used to literally be a lawn by the sea where people once set up towels to watch the surfers come in has recently been transformed into a full-on beach club. The chic setting filled with bohemian umbrellas and bistro lights is a great place to take a relaxing day in the sun into evening — although you’ll want to dress the part once night falls as some of Canggu’s hippest come out to play here. The Lawn also features a full menu that stays on theme with its local surroundings focusing on fresh, modern cuisine and seafood as well as a variety of dishes inspired by Indonesian, Thai and Italian food.
