Buffalo Mountain Lodge, located five minutes from the center of Banff, is what winter cabin dreams are made of. Away from the tourist crowds yet conveniently situated within short driving distance to Banff’s major attractions, this rustic hotel is the ideal location to situate yourself during a trip to Banff and its surrounding national parks. Looking for a peaceful retreat that feels like true mountain living? Look no further.

Drive up Tunnel Mountain Road (also named “sleeping buffalo” by the native people) from the center of town and you’ll be greeted by a collection of connected log cabins, each room featuring its own independent entrance to the outside of the property. The main lodge where check-in and dining is located is a cozy welcome — especially this time of year — with a massive Christmas tree decorated in the foyer and festive lights adorning the lounge/bar.

The best part of a stay at Buffalo Mountain Lodge, in my opinion, are the stunning mountain vistas that surround this cozy cabin getaway. The property truly feels uniquely remote yet without any of the inconveniences that come with a stay set away from it all.

THE ROOMS

We were booked into one of the property’s Premier Rooms which featured two queen beds, a small mud room area for our coats and wet boots, a wood burning stone fireplace which the staff stocks daily with complimentary firewood, and a small outdoor patio with chairs to enjoy the mountain views.

The best part of the Premier Rooms are the spacious bathrooms stocked with L’Occitane products which featured both a separate shower stall and an old fashioned claw-footed bathtub, perfect for decompressing from the cold. The slate floors are also heated which is a lifesaver for your chilly toes after getting in from a long day of snowy activities.

THE GROUNDS

In addition to the cozy lodging, the property features an on-site gym, sauna and hot tub that we happily enjoyed before hunkering down for the evening.

Also don’t miss the clearing adjacent to the back group of lodges for stunning mountain views that will make you feel like you’re high up in the clouds.

BUFFALO MOUNTAIN LODGE DINING

Even if you don’t decide to stay at Buffalo Mountain Lodge, I would highly recommend booking a dinner reservation for their Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant and Lounge — I was blown away by how delicious our meal was!

For dinner we ordered up the Artisan Salad and Seared Scallops as an appetizer and then finished it off with the Pacific Halibut which was filling and flavorful. They also feature a great wine list and recently won Gold at the Vancouver International Wine Awards.

For breakfast the next morning, I treated myself to the Mountain Granola which was more like desert (whoops) but SO tasty. If you’re looking for something vegan/gluten free, I would say the dining here isn’t your best option but it’s definitely worth it for a treat.

Live Like It’s the Weekend was graciously invited as a guest of Buffalo Mountain Lodge, but as always, all my opinions are my own and I would never promote anything I don’t freaking love.
