Looking for the best things to do in Encinitas? You’re in the right place – I’m sharing everything I loved about living in this beloved Southern California coastal city.

When my husband and I first moved down to North County San Diego, our first home was a little beach bungalow in the enclave of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, which is part of the greater city of Encinitas. Living in Encinitas gave me a huge appreciation for how much this area of North County has to offer beyond its beaches and quintessential surf culture.

Now, I still live only 10 minutes away so I come into town often to hit up my favorite spots. It’s truly a gem of Southern California and it’s hard not to fall in love with the area and its laid-back attitude.

Whether you’re visiting for a day trip or planning a longer stay, Encinitas has an awesome mix of things to explore. Between outdoor activities, one-of-a-kind attractions, healthy cafes, coffee shops, and hidden-gem boutiques, there’s plenty to keep you busy—but without making your trip feel busy, if you know what I mean.

In this guide, I’m sharing all the top things to do in Encinitas along with my favorite local gems to help you make the most of your stay.

The Best Things to Do in Encinitas, California

Encinitas is the perfect place to come for a long weekend if you’re seeking a relaxing coastal getaway that you can take at your own pace.

You don’t need to do a whole lot when you’re here. A laid-back beach day and brunch is absolutely enough. But if you’re looking for more unique things to check out there’s plenty to fill your plate.

The area has stunning beaches, great food options, a thriving wellness scene, and outdoor activities that appeal to all kinds of travelers. Focusing on what excites you most and planning your time strategically will help you make the most of your visit to this coastal city.

Where Is Encinitas, California?

Encinitas is a coastal city along the Pacific Coast roughly 30 miles north of downtown San Diego. It’s tucked between Solana Beach and Carlsbad in North County San Diego.

In 1986, the city officially incorporated bringing a handful of the beach communities together. They each have their own unique flavor and make up the greater Encinitas area.

The five distinct areas of Encinitas:

  • Leucadia: Located at the northernmost part of Encinitas, Leucadia has a funky, artsy surf vibe with one main drag that runs through it filled with a ton of mom-and-pop shops.
  • Cardiff-by-the-Sea: With its scenic coastal trail and stunning oceanfront homes, Cardiff still has that laid-back surfer vibe but with a little more polish.
  • Old Encinitas: Where you’ll find the walkable downtown with lively bars and shops close to the beach.
  • New Encinitas: East of the 5 freeway, this section of Encinitas is more suburban with newer neighborhoods and larger shopping centers.
  • Olivenhain: Inland Encinitas where you’ll find a more rural community with larger estates and designated horse trails.

How to Get to Encinitas

Surfers dotting the ocean at sunset

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is the closest major airport to Encinitas. From there, it’s an easy 35-40 minute drive north on the I-5. You could also fly into Carlsbad’s Palomar Airport which is a much smaller regional airport, but they offer limited commercial flight options.

If you’re flying in, I highly recommend renting a car, which will allow you to move around with greater ease. Discover Cars is my favorite car rental aggregator for easy comparisons between rental agencies and finding the best deals.

If you’re looking for a car-free option coming up from San Diego, the Coaster commuter train makes a stop in Encinitas. Downtown Encinitas and the stretch along Highway 101 are easy to walk or bike, but if your itinerary is going to take you beyond the downtown area it’s still easiest to have a vehicle.

Note that Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner does not stop in Encinitas; the closest Amtrak stops are typically Solana Beach or Oceanside.

Is Encinitas Worth Visiting?

Biker cruising along the Cardiff Coastal Rail Trail

Yes—Encinitas is one of my favorite beach towns in California because it feels much more relaxed and local than some of the bigger coastal destinations.

You don’t have a ton of “big attractions” here, but that’s the point. You’ll spend your time strolling outside, going for a dip in the ocean, and partaking in the wellness culture if that appeals to you. It’s not a place to check things off your bucket list, but rather to soak up the area’s beautiful natural surroundings.

If you’re after a laid-back coastal escape with a strong local identity, Encinitas is hard to beat.

One thing to know going in: Encinitas definitely leans casual which is part of its charm. That effortless energy is what makes this place super special.

What Is Encinitas Known For?

  • Surf Culture – Encinitas is one of the most celebrated surf towns on the California Coast. Home to Swami’s, a world-renowned surf break, Encinitas has surf culture woven into everyday life here.
  • Beaches – From the beloved Moonlight State Beach to the tucked-away Beacon’s Beach, the coastline is stunning with a variety of beaches to enjoy that all have their own unique character.
  • Chill Cafes – The coffee scene here punches well above its weight. Encinitas has a culture of thoughtfully made coffee in spaces designed for long mornings and slow conversations.
  • Wellness and Spiritual Scene – Encinitas has been a hub for yoga, meditation, and holistic wellness for decades. The spiritual energy shows in the abundance of yoga studios, crystal shops, and wellness offerings throughout town.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Encinitas?

View overlooking San Elijo Lagoon from the top of Annie's Canyon Trail

One of the best things about Encinitas is that there really isn’t a bad time to visit because the weather is reliably pleasant year-round.

Summer brings the warmest beach weather and the liveliest atmosphere, but it’s also the busiest season so beaches can get crowded.

Winter in Encinitas is still relatively mild compared to most of the country. While you may not be swimming every day, you can still enjoy the beaches, hikes, and other outdoor activities.

Late spring and early fall are the best times to visit as they tend to hit the sweet spot of warm weather, smaller crowds, and beautiful ocean conditions.

One caveat: If you’re coming solely for a beach vacation, you might want to avoid May-June when California experiences increased marine layer activity, which locals have named “May Gray” and “June Gloom.” Typically it burns off in the afternoon, but July to September are safer bets for long, sunny days.

Where to Stay in Encinitas

If you’re looking for memorable, design-forward stays with incredible service, then these hotels are your best bet. I’ve personally stayed at all three of these hotels and can vouch for the fact that each one offers a completely different feel, which tells you a lot about how much personality this small town has.

Alila Marea Encinitas

Alila Marea Encinitas ($$$) – For the most luxurious stay in the area, Alila Marea is absolutely the move. This is the place to stay if you want a full resort feel with on-site restaurants, a spa, and other top-notch amenities.

I’ve actually stayed here twice and my favorite parts of the property are the poolside sauna with ocean views, their spa services (I had an incredible microneedling facial here), and their rooftop bar, which is idyllic at sunset.

The hotel sits on a cliff above the ocean with direct access to South Ponto Beach, so whether you’re more of a pool or beach person, you get the best of both worlds.

Their chic eatery, VAGA, also boasts one of the best oceanfront dining setups in North County.

Overall, the property feels sleek and modern while still embracing the relaxed Encinitas vibe.

Inn at Moonlight Beach

Inn at Moonlight Beach ($$) – This one is a little slice of zen heaven and such a hidden gem. The hotel is within walking distance to Moonlight Beach and has this incredible “Bali in California” feel that I wasn’t expecting at all.

It is also the first hotel in the world to achieve WELL Certification™ which is a building standard that focuses on supporting human health and wellness.

Some of the ways in which Inn at Moonlight Beach supports these efforts are through high-quality air ventilation systems, whole-hotel water filtration, healthy breakfast offerings, mindfulness activations, and a unique circadian lighting system.

This is truly one of the more special hotels I’ve ever stayed at with its own distinctive essence. They have an organic garden on-site where guests are encouraged to pick their own produce. And they offer truly one-of-a-king amenities like human design readings and honey infusion workshops.

Twelve Senses Retreat

Twelve Senses, Encinitas

Twelve Senses Retreat ($$) – A boutique hidden gem that perfectly embodies the wellness culture of Encinitas, this Michelin Guide recommended spot is incredibly intimate with only four guest rooms.

Every room is different and thoughtfully curated by owner Anke Bodack, whose vision gives the space so much character.

What To Do In Encinitas, California

1. Surf at Swami’s Beach

You can’t talk about Encinitas without mentioning surfing. Swami’s Beach is one of the most iconic surf spots in Southern California, drawing surfers from all over the world.

Even if you don’t surf (I’m personally terrified of waves!), it’s worth visiting just to watch experienced surfers paddle out while you take in the ocean views, especially in the early mornings or at sunset. Something about it truly feels meditative.

If you’re newer to surfing, there are also plenty of beginner-friendly beaches nearby.

2. Book a Treatment at Four Moons Spa

Four Moons Spa is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of California and into a lush, tropical retreat in Bali. This is a complete wellness sanctuary, and getting any of their treatments is one of my favorite ways to relax in the area.

The space totally transports you with its lush foliage, Balinese huts, waterfall and Koi pond.

Massage and facials are two popular treatments here, but their offerings go well beyond just beauty services. At Four Moons you can book reiki healings, sound journeys, mineral soaks and more.

They also host frequent events and classes like yoga and sound healing, so make sure to check their events calendar for the dates of your stay.

This is a truly special spa experience in North County and such a good addition to a wellness-focused trip.

3. Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens

The Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens is one of the most peaceful spots on the Southern California coast and one of the most under-appreciated free things to do in the area.

Perched on a cliff above the ocean near Swami’s, the gardens at the Self-Realization Fellowship are filled with koi ponds, lush greenery, meditation benches for quiet reflection, and gorgeous coastal views.

Visiting here never gets old; it’s a serene place to wander through the gardens, meditate, or simply sit and watch the surfers below.

4. Spend the Day at One of the Best Beaches

South Ponto Beach

Obviously, you can’t come to Encinitas without spending some time at the beach. The coastline has some of the best beaches in California, so there’s something for everyone no matter what type of beach day you’re looking for.

South Ponto is a rare gem popular for its wide shoreline and secludedness thanks to the surrounding sand dunes. The beach has volleyball courts for a more active crowd and fire pits for evenings, while the easy access and laid-back atmosphere make it great for families or a relaxed afternoon by the water.

Moonlight State Beach is the most well-known beach in town and gives a classic Encinitas experience. The beach is great for swimming, has volleyball courts, a snack bar, and plenty of room to spread out for a full beach day. Families and first-time visitors will especially enjoy it here.

Moonlight State Beach

Cardiff State Beach is popular with surfers and a favorite spot for campers staying nearby at San Elijo State Beach. You have to catch the gorgeous sunset views at least once while you’re here. Parking here can fill up quickly though, so plan accordingly.

Grandview Surf Beach is one of the most active surf spots and great for tide pooling during low tide. Check the tides before heading out since high tide can completely cover the sand.

Swami’s Beach is one of the best spots for surfing in SoCal. Enjoy the water or the epic views of the surfers from the cliffs above either in the morning or evening during sunset.

Beacon’s Beach is a longtime local favorite where swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, and picnicking are popular. You have to walk down a steep path from the cliffs to the beach which gives it a more tucked away feel and neighborhood vibe.

5. Visit the Leucadia Farmers Market on Sundays

Row of pop up tents with vendors selling produce at Leucadia Farmer's Market

Every Sunday morning, the Leucadia Farmers Market brings the community together in the best way. This is one of my favorite places to stop by on weekends, not only to stock up on local produce but also to just feel the good vibes.

Families are out and about. There’s typically live music playing. Vendors are super friendly. You can find non-food vendors selling everything from crystals and clothing to plants and even ukuleles. It’s a true neighborhood vibe that can be enjoyed no matter where you live.

If you’re in town over a weekend, it’s worth adding to your itinerary. The market runs from 10am-2pm and pairs perfectly with a cafe stop before or after.

6. Explore the Local Cafe Culture

Whatever Forever

Encinitas has one of the best cafe scenes of any beach town in California, and I say that as someone who takes my coffee shop game very seriously. There are A LOT of cafes to explore throughout the area, but of course I have some personal favorites.

Coffee Coffee is great for boho surf vibes with some nice outdoor seating—sometimes they even have live music.

Lofty Coffee has two locations directly across the street from one another off the main drag in Encinitas. I personally like the one on the east side of the street as it’s a much bigger location perched high above the street for great people watching views.

Whatever Forever Coffee moved to a new space in Leucadia that’s fully outdoors, where coffee is served out of a vintage trailer. The ambiance is great and it’s located within the same shopping area as some of my favorite shops in town like Thread Spun.

Necessity Coffee is tucked just behind S Coast Hwy 101, so it’s a great option if you’re exploring downtown Encinitas.

Pannikin is also a quintessential Encinitas spot and one of the oldest coffee shops in the area with a charming building and loyal following.

7. Walk the Coastal Rail Trail

Yellow flowers blooming along the Cardiff Coastal Rail Trail

For our first year living in North County, we lived only a 5-minute walk from Cardiff’s Coastal Rail Trail, and it totally spoiled me. I walked it several times per week without ever getting tired of it and I still drive back to walk it even though we’re a bit further away now.

The coastal trail runs along the bluffs and railroad tracks above the ocean and offers beautiful scenic views while winding through Cardiff-by-the-Sea. A stroll along the 1.3 mile trail is such an easy way to soak up the coastal lifestyle. Any time of the day is amazing on this trail, but I especially love walking it at sunset.

Want to make it a longer loop? Walk the full length of the Rail Trail and then connect onto Coast Hwy via the pedestrian underpass by Swami’s OR on the opposite end at the traffic light at Chesterfield Drive.

8. Take Surf Lessons

Surfer riding a way in Cardiff by the Sea

If you’ve ever wanted to try surfing but haven’t yet, Encinitas is one of the best places to give it a go. Several surf schools in the area offer beginner lessons, and many beaches have gentler conditions that are more manageable for newbies.

Leucadia Surf School and Encinitas Surf Lessons are well-known surf schools in the area. If you’d rather take more one-on-one lessons from a local, this private session is a great option.

Surf culture is so embedded in this community and taking a lesson is a surefire way to experience it firsthand and get a better understanding of the local vibe.

9. Grab Healthy Bites in Town

To pair perfectly with the wellness culture here, there are plenty of healthy cafes and restaurants in Encinitas. These spots below are must-adds to any Encinitas food tour.

Waverly is one of my go-to happy hour spots in the area. The restaurant has super cute decor, a relaxed vibe, and the food is amazing for the price. My pro tip: order the crouton appetizer. I know it sounds weird, but trust me, it’s divine.

Nectarine Grove should be your go-to if you have any dietary restrictions, as they can accommodate many. Even if you don’t though it’s solid food for anyone. I’ve never eaten a bad meal here. I particularly love their breakfast burrito and plantain-crusted chicken tenders.

Goodonya Organic Eatery prides themselves on being 99% organic, 100% Non-GMO, and overall health conscious focusing on eliminating bad oils and making healthier swaps. They have a variety of options for brunch and lunch including burritos, bowls, egg dishes, burgers (my fave!), salads and more.

Atelier Manna is one I’ve been wanting to try for a while now. This Michelin recommended brunch and lunch spot serves artful renditions of breakfast staples like blue corn chilaquiles, a croissant breakfast sandwich, Turkish eggs and more.

Fox Point Farms is the most family-friendly place to go in Encinitas and everyone I know with kids is obsessed with this spot. Their cafe serves farm-to-table items like salads and sandwiches, plus coffee, kombucha and beer on tap. There’s an adorable market as well, along with tons of outdoor seating, a large lawn for kids to play on, and a playground. The ideal place to make both adults and kids happy!

10. Hike Annie’s Canyon Trail

Steep ladder between rocks along Annie's Canyon Trail

Near the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, Annie’s Canyon Trail is one of the most unique hikes near San Diego. It’s almost hard to believe that it’s so close to the beach.

This short but fun hike will take you on an adventure through narrow slot canyons, elevated viewpoints, and picturesque coastal scenery. It’s only about two miles round trip, but it’s a great option for an active morning before a beach day or brunch in town.

Things to keep in mind: dogs are welcome on most of the trail except the slot canyon and some sections get steep and narrow. The earlier you go, the better to avoid crowds.

11. Visit the San Diego Botanic Garden

Even though Encinitas is known for its beaches, spending an afternoon at the San Diego Botanic Garden is the perfect change of pace. The gardens span nearly 40 acres with 4 miles of trails, 29 themed gardens, and the largest public bamboo collection in North America.

You can easily spend a few hours wandering or joining one of their wellness classes, tours, or special events in this beautiful urban oasis. Plus, they have a great children’s garden if you’re visiting with kids.

12. Shop and Stroll Downtown Encinitas

One of the best things to do in downtown Encinitas is simply wander along Highway 101. This area captures the town’s laid-back vibe perfectly, so don’t be surprised if you see people walking around barefoot with a surfboard in hand.

While I wouldn’t say shopping here is the focus, I do have some personal favorite gems in case you’re in the mood to treat yourself.

Some local spots I love that you can’t miss:

  • Flashbacks – A funky vintage resale shop with amazing finds. We did some of our best Burning Man shopping here.
  • Thread Spun – Further into Leucadia, this boutique is incredibly well-curated and worth a slight detour. You’ll find everything here from trendy books and clothing to kitchenware, artful greeting cards, jewelry and much more.
  • Soulscape Gift & Book StoreA favorite of mine for crystals and metaphysical items. They also have lots of books and unexpected finds that make great gifts.
  • Salt CultureI adore all their cute clothing and jewelry with a beachy, feminine feel.
  • Apostrophe Home – This is the sister store to one of my favorite shops in Carlsbad just 15 minutes north. They have an incredible curated selection of furniture, antique finds, vintage rugs and more.
  • Moonlight Marketplace – This outdoor market is open every Saturday and Sunday and offers all your typical flea market finds.

13. Camp at San Elijo State Beach

Vehicles parked in the camping area at San Elijo Beach in Cardiff

Beach camping in California doesn’t get more idyllic than along San Elijo State Beach; it’s one of the most coveted camping spots in SoCal. The campground has select RV hookup sites, a surf school on-site, and is walking distance to the town center of Cardiff.

Campsites are right on the bluffs above the ocean, so try to snag a spot on the westernmost side for stunning sunset views and the sound of waves lapping throughout your stay.

Reservations can fill up quickly, especially during summer, so be sure to plan ahead. Book in advance if camping here is a priority on your Encinitas trip. Book your campground here.

14. Take a Yoga Class

Given Encinitas’ deep roots in wellness, the yoga and meditation offerings here are plentiful. Countless yoga studios around the area offer everything from traditional flow to hot yoga and even beach classes. Even if you’re not a regular practitioner at home, Encinitas is a great place to try a class.

A few top studios to check out: Good Yoga, Asteya Collective, Soul of Yoga, and Yoga Box. If you want to practice in a more memorable setting, check out the yoga event offerings at Four Moons Spa and the San Diego Botanic Garden.

15. Try the Famous Cardiff Crack

Pop up tent selling Cardiff Crack in front of Seaside Market

No Encinitas guide would be complete without including my go-to indulgent Saturday afternoon order — Cardiff Crack from Seaside Market. The legendary Burgundy pepper-marinated tri-tip is incredibly juicy and tender and well-loved by both locals and visitors. Ordering it in a surf and turf burrito is my absolute favorite way to enjoy it.
