Where you stay in Copenhagen can shape your trip more than you might think. Yes, the city is relatively compact and easy to get around, but its neighborhoods each have their own personality, and choosing the right one can really influence the kind of experience you have.

Some areas are best if you want to be close to the main sights, while others are a better fit if your priorities are great restaurants, nightlife, easy transit access or a more local feel. Budget matters too, of course, but taking the time to understand Copenhagen’s different neighborhoods will help you choose a base that actually feels aligned with your travel style.

When I finally took a solo trip to Copenhagen after visiting more than 50 countries as a travel blogger, I completely fell for it. I ended up spending six nights exploring as many corners of the city as possible. And to this day, it just might be my favorite city in Europe.

But I’ve always been of the belief that while the destination itself matters, your accommodation matters equally as much. It’s not just a place to sleep—it’s where you’ll come back each night to recharge, reset and hopefully feel even more excited for the next day’s adventures.

And in a city like Copenhagen, there’s a lot to be excited about: charming canals, cozy candlelit cafés, beautiful design stores, a flourishing dining scene and that effortlessly cool Scandinavian atmosphere the city does so well.

Below, I’m breaking down the best neighborhoods to stay in Copenhagen for first-timers, along with a few great options beyond the city center if you’re looking for a different experience. And because I’m especially drawn to design-driven stays, every hotel in this guide was chosen with that in mind, with beautiful options across a range of price points.

Before we get into all the best neighborhoods, hotels and Airbnbs in Copenhagen, there are a few details you should know beforehand that will help you get better acquainted with the city.

Keep reading for a few planning logistics before we dive into the most stunning places to stay in Copenhagen.

Is Copenhagen Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, yes! As someone who adores all things art, design, and aesthetics, Copenhagen is a dream to visit. I still can’t believe I waited as long as I did to check it off my bucket list. But there’s so much more to the city than those few things. 

Copenhagen is one of the most walkable and easy-to-navigate cities I’ve been to and also one of the most well-rounded destinations in Europe. Copenhagen has tons of variety in a compact area so there’s something for every type of traveler.

In Copenhagen you’ll find: 

• Beautiful architecture and historic castles
• Incredible museums and edgy art exhibits
• One of Europe’s most exciting dining scenes
• Fabulous coffee and cafe culture
• Unique wellness experiences
• Bustling shopping streets
• Tons of character within each neighborhood

When Is The Best Time To Visit Copenhagen?

Like many European cities, peak season in Copenhagen is during the summer months. The weather is warm. Days are long (with up to 17 hours of daylight!). And there are fun events like the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in July and Copenhagen Pride in August. 

Holidays in December are another popular time to visit because of the Christmas Markets and festive vibe throughout the city. The weather is much colder though.

To avoid peak crowds and high prices, I also recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons. Months like May or September, when the weather is just starting to warm up or cool down don’t have as many crowds. To experience the winter magic outside the Christmas Markets, visit the Copenhagen Light Festival from January to February.

How Long Should You Stay In Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is perfect for a long weekend. But I’d recommend at least three or four days to get a better feel for the city. Anything less than that and you might feel rushed to fit it all in. You can hit the major highlights in three or four days, but you also won’t get bored if you decide to stay for a week or more. 

If you do have the extra time, it’s totally worth it. You’ll be able to slow down, explore different neighborhoods, and truly enjoy the culture. 

I ended up spending six days in Copenhagen, and in that time, I experienced so much and got a really good feel for the city without feeling rushed.

What to Expect from Accommodations in Copenhagen

If you love Scandinavian design, historic hotels, and boutique city hotels, then you’ll love the hotel scene in Copenhagen. You can expect clean lines, minimalist interiors, and thoughtful details everywhere.

One thing to note: you won’t find large resort-style stays in the city. Most accommodations are compact city hotels and rooms can be on the smaller side especially in the city center.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Denmark and Copenhagen are generally not budget-friendly destinations, and prices will be higher during peak seasons and holidays. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is possible to find reasonable prices if you travel outside of peak times.

What to Consider When Choosing Copenhagen Accommodations

When choosing where to stay in Copenhagen, here are some key factors to consider:

• Room size (especially if you’re traveling with multiple people or your family). Make sure to double check square footage as some rooms are extremely compact.
• Walking distance to points of interest on your itinerary
• Proximity to bus, metro, and train stations if you plan on taking public transport 
• Whether you want to prioritize a central location, bars and restaurants, nightlife, major attractions, or a quieter neighborhood
• Your overall travel style

Where I Stayed During My Time in Copenhagen

Since I visited the city for a full six days, I decided to split my time between Indre By and Vesterbro to experience both neighborhoods fully.

In Indre By, I stayed at the 1 Hotel, which is a newer addition to the city and felt quite spacious for a city hotel. I’ve always been a fan of the 1 Hotel brand’s calming neutral interiors and focus on sustainability.

This location also has an amazing lobby restaurant and bar with super high ceilings, beautiful furnishings and plentiful seating; it’s a great spot to cowork or sip your morning cappuccino. From here, I was in easy walking distance to all the hotspots of Indre By. Also, it’s just around the corner from my favorite bakery in the city, Skt. Peders Bageri—their cardamom buns are a must!

While in Vesterbro, I checked in to the NH Copenhagen Grand Joanne which is just next to the train station and strikes a great balance between upscale design vibes and affordability. They’ve done a beautiful job with their communal spaces, including a gorgeous cafe/restaurant, Joanne’s which serves modern Italian cuisine.

This hotel is much more of a compact city hotel compared to the 1 Hotel, but since I was traveling solo I didn’t mind the small room size. I would just say if you are traveling as a couple or family to book a Superior Room or something larger to accommodate your group more comfortably.

Best Areas to Stay In Copenhagen If It’s Your First Visit

Indre By (City Center)

Indre By is the heart of Copenhagen which makes it the best place to stay in the city for first-timers. You’ll also find many of the city’s most iconic landmarks and top attractions in this historic city center. Places like Nyhavn’s famous canals, many museums, and the main shopping street: Strøget.

Staying in this neighborhood will put you within walking distance to most of the best things to do in Copenhagen, making it an ideal central location with easy access to public transport.

🌟 71 Nyhavn ($) – This beautiful waterfront hotel directly overlooks Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most iconic canal district. The converted warehouse from the 1800s features understated Scandinavian elegance and exposed beams. It’s also in a prime location close to Amalienborg Palace and a metro station. 

🌟 Hotel Petra ($) – Hotel Petra is a design driven hotel that mixes classic and contemporary styles by renowned Danish designer, &Tradition. Rooms feature an eclectic mix between the furniture, lighting, and architecture. From the hotel, it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to Rosenborg Castle and Marmorkirken Station.

🌟 Boutique Hotel SP34 ($) – This boutique hotel in Copenhagen’s Latin Quarter combines minimalistic design with a trendy luxurious vibe. There are three restaurant hot-spots around the hotel and it’s also a short walk to Tivoli Gardens and Strøget shopping street. I also love that they do a complimentary wine hour each evening.

🌟 Nobis Hotel Copenhagen($$) – With an ideal location near Tivoli Gardens, City Hall Square, and Copenhagen Central Station, you don’t need to go far to enjoy the city if you’re staying at Nobis Hotel Copenhagen. This hotel also features contemporary Scandinavian architecture with a refined atmosphere in a historic neoclassical building from 1903. 

🌟 Manon Les Suites ($$) – Manon Les Suites is an all-suite hotel that gives you a tropical escape in the center of Copenhagen. Between the iconic (and very Instagram-worthy) Junglefish Pool surrounded by lush greenery, a rooftop lounge & spa, and a somewhat hidden cocktail bar, you’ll definitely have an unforgettable stay here.

🌟 Hotel d’Angleterre ($$$) – To have the ultimate luxury stay in a historic landmark, I recommend staying at Hotel d’Angleterre. The 270-year-old building balances Victorian architecture with modern Nordic design. It features a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site, Marchal, which is the city’s only Michelin restaurant with a la carte options. Plus, this is the best hotel to stay at during the holidays as they go all out with decorations and are located across from Copenhagen Winter Wonderland at Kongens Nytorv.

🌟 Hotel Sanders ($$$) – This design-centric boutique hotel is “the place to stay” in Copenhagen, so if you can stomach the nightly room rate, you won’t be disappointed. Located right behind Nyhavn Canal and within walking distance of Amalienborg Palace, Hotel Sanders feels like a private members-only club and rooms are intimately inspired by the era of luxury train cabins with bespoke furniture pieces throughout.

🌟 Cozy Apartment in the Heart of Copenhagen ($) – This beautifully decorated apartment is within 5-10 minutes of multiple city landmarks and the metro. Keep in mind it’s on the 4th floor with no elevator if accessibility is an issue, but it’s in a prime location.

🌟 Historic House & Lush Garden ($$$) – This hidden gem near Strøget has luxurious cozy vibes with an outdoor space that features a lush garden in a private yard. It’s like a little oasis within the city center!

🌟 Private Luxury Suite /Art Gallery ($$$) – Art and design lovers will adore this space. The two bedroom apartment is located in a historic building from 1789 that was once a theater, and the space has high ceilings, with tasteful decorations and plentiful art throughout.

Vesterbro

Vesterbro is one of Copenhagen’s trendiest neighborhoods with a cool and hip vibe. Until the 90s, it was known as the red light district, but now it’s a lively creative hot spot. The area is known for its food and cafe scene, bar and club scene (though Copenhagen isn’t a huge nightlife city), and having an authentic local feel. 

Vesterbro is home to the Meatpacking District, which is a hub for some of the best local spots in the city and Tivoli Gardens. Its location is next to Copenhagen’s central station so it’s a great base for public transportation.

Combining its original charm with modern Scandinavian design, it has a feminine welcoming atmosphere. In fact, I stayed here for a few nights and loved its proximity to the Central train station, Tivoli Gardens and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum.

🌟 Coco Hotel ($) – Another one of Copenhagen’s chic boutique hotels, Coco Hotel is a classic Copenhagen-style building. It also has a restaurant and cafe on-site and was rated Travel + Leisure’s Best Hotel in Scandinavia in 2023 in the World’s Best Awards.

🌟 Villa Copenhagen ($$) – This luxury hotel is situated in the historic Central Post & Telegraph Head Office blending its past and present. Spaces have a strong design focus with conscious luxury in mind and the hotel features a year-round heated rooftop pool. One of my favorite brunch spots in the city, Rug Bakery, is located on the ground floor.

🌟 Scandic Kødbyen ($$) – Scandic Kødbyen is located right in the Meatpacking District close to some of the city’s best nightclubs and bars, and it’s highly rated as a great spot for couples. It has a restaurant on-site, but there are lots of good restaurants and cafes nearby as well.

🌟 Nimb Hotel ($$$) – Nimb is a boutique 5-star hotel featuring a Moorish-style design with views directly overlooking Tivoli Gardens. The rooms are decorated with fairytale luxury and the hotel also offers wellness and culinary experiences to elevate your stay. If you’re seeking more amenities and top-notch customer service from your Copenhagen hotel, this is a great option.

🌟 Designer 3-Bedroom Apartment ($$$) – From each piece of furniture to the punchy art on the walls, you can tell that everything was thoughtfully curated in this home. The place comfortably accommodates four guests, and it features a balcony and more space if you’re looking for family rooms.

🌟 Stylish 4-Bedroom Apartment($$$) – This spacious Nordic-style apartment is perfect for families or anyone traveling with larger groups. You’ll get more space, which can be hard to come by in the center of Copenhagen. It’s also close to a metro station and several bus stops in a lively neighborhood.

Other Neighborhoods to Consider Staying in Copenhagen

Indre By and Vesterbro are honestly the top neighborhoods I would recommend staying in for your first visit to Copenhagen. Since they’re in the city center, you don’t have to spend as much time commuting across the city. 

But maybe you’re planning for a longer stay, traveling with family or big groups, or want something specifically outside of the city center. If so, these are the other neighborhoods I would recommend in Copenhagen. 

Nørrebro

Nørrebro is northwest of Indre By. It’s a multicultural neighborhood with a diverse range of dining, cafes, and shops. The area is great for foodies and those who want something more budget-friendly, especially if you’re traveling solo. In addition, the vibrant energy in Nørrebro lends to a more local experience.

Note: Hotel options are a bit limited in this neighborhood, but if Nørrebro feels like the best fit for your trip, I’ve included some solid options below.

The four bedroom duplex combines rustic character with modern comfort, featuring exposed wooden beams, wooden floors, and lower bedroom ceilings for a cozy feel. This is a great option for families. 

Christianshavn

Christianshavn is a canal-lined neighborhood just over the harbor bridges from Indre By. It’s charming and a bit quieter than the canal areas in the city center, giving it a less touristy feel overall. If it’s your first time in Copenhagen, I’d probably still recommend staying in the core city center, but if it’s your second or third visit, Christianshavn can be a great base for exploring more of the Amager side of the city.

Nearby, you’ll find places like Freetown Christiania, Copenhagen’s infamous self-governing commune, as well as Copenhagen Contemporary over on Refshaleøen.

Here, you’re far enough from the hustle and bustle of CPH, but still close enough to be within the city center in around 10 minutes.
